August 4, 2014 was the quilters guild meeting. Diana Shull gave a workshop that used just a pin wheel block. Just cutting that block into nine equal pieces you could make four different block patterns from that original pin wheel depending on how you lay out the pieces. Awesome! Most of the meeting was taken up with the details for the float that was entered into the centennial parade and getting the details down for the quilt show in Sept. Show and tell was light but what we were shown was great. Work on getting pieces done for the quilt show and see you there.

The white elephant sale was held this evening with the proceeds to go to the Hospice Fund. RREC sent a representative to see what the guild does for the Hospice program and to write up an article in their magazine about our contributions to the Hospice program. Discussion on the Beulah Fair, the parade in Beulah and our quilt show was held. As usual a wonderful show and tell was presented.

June 2, 2014 Guild Meeting
Please forgive the tardiness of the blog this month. With the leaving of Clare Kupcho, she has been coaching me on how to do the blog. Forgive me for re-sending last months but I was trying to see how each key did and before I knew it I had posted the old blog. Why someone who has no skills with a computer would volunteer to do this I do not know but I will do my best. I think that I figured out how to caption the pictures so if they are, please accept my apologies because there was one quilter who I had absolutely no idea how to spell her name, knew how to say it but not spell it. Jo'el gave a lesson on how to sew a binding on from start to finish with no hand stitching at all. This was a great lesson and will come in handy on the finishing of hospice quilts. I intend to make about ten copies of the instructions and put them everywhere in my sewing room so I can always find it. The July meeting will have the white elephant sale where you can bring your unwanted sewing treasures from home and have it benefit the hospice program. The board will be hosting the guild with an ice cream social during the sale.

May 2014 Meeting
Kathy gave us a workshop on paper piecing. She brought a vast array of her paperpieced projects. She is definately a master at this technique. She gave directions, which I will put onto this website, that I often forget when using the add-a-quarter ruler. This was helpful to me and I hope also helpful to you. She also gave us websites to check for free patterns. We had about 30 people at guild. Many of the snowbirds were back. Welcome back! You will notice the full tables in the slide show. several people had show and tell. Maybe we had a lot more tell than show, but it was a fun night.
General Directions for paper piecing: Place fabric piece #1 right side up over the #1 spot on the blank side of the paper making sure that it extends beyond all the lines at least 1/4". Pin in place with flat head pin. Place a postcard on the line between #1 and #2 and fold the paper back to expose the excess fabric. Place an Add-a-quarter ruler on the fold and trim the excess fabric. Place fabric #2 right sides together with fabric #1 and sew using a 90/14 needle and stitch length of 18-20 stitches /inch (my machine setting is 1.5) with an open toe foot starting 1/4" before and after the marked line. Press fabric #2 away from #1 with a dry iron to form a crisp flat seam. Place the postcard on the next line you will sew (#1 and #3) and fold the paper back exposing the excess fabric and trim away before aligning the next piece of fabric. Continue until the paper foundation is filled. Trim fabric and paper making sure to leave 1/4" seam allowance around all edges.
Websites for free patterns.
There are many more, just do a good search.

Diana H. gave a workshop on disappearing 9 patch with a twist. she credited maggiemayquilts.blogspot.com as a source of her project. Everyone was interested in the directions. We had several great show and tell items, including our 2014 Raffle quilt, done in Asian fabrics. Check out the slide show to see what our members were showing this month.

The long awaited blog post! March 2014
Some of you must have thought "that quilt guild from Hazen, ND must have quit meeting!" Well, the weather was starting to make most of us members think that! For you snow birds, you didn't miss much as far as meetings. Our Christmas party got cancelled because of an ice storm. We didn't really want to risk anyone getting hurt driving to a meeting, some people even let the board know they wouldn't attempt to travel. So, the Christmas party got pushed to January. January came and brought another ice/snow storm. The Christmas party got pushed to February. The meeting happened, (but I wasn't there) Peggy took pictures. Things they did at the party: Member Bingo - match the bingo question to the current member of the guild. We also played the game "So you want to be a quilter" It is a quilting triva shop hop game that came out in the last year or two. We changed it up a little, we wanted to make it more interactive for a group, so we gave people 2.5 inch strips of Christmas fabric, and they had to find members with that matching strip and they formed a team. Then the locations they needed to "shop" at were all around the room. The board is set up kind of like a clue board and you have to stop at different quilt shops and of course coffee shops and gas stations. You might need a little snack on your way to your quilt shop destination. I wish I could tell you how it went, all I know is I hope we get to play it again. You GET to answer questions related to sewing or quilting. Just when you think you know quite a bit, you realize you don't really know much at all. We did have a 5 yard quilt day in January. Diana Shull shared 5 or 6 patterns and several of us made quilts on that Saturday. It was fun to have a sewing day! Hopefully more sewing days in the future. Luella showed us how to use the X block templates. They make some interesting quilts, and the patterns use up most of your scraps, so there is no waste. Here Teri thought she might be able to pick up some scraps from people and then Luella said, oh, we will use those scraps in the border! Our president Jackie played a game with us in March. We all brought a ugly fat quarter of fabric and she read a story as we passed our fat quarters LEFT and RIGHT every time she said those words. She was trying to get us to start thinking about our next QUILT SHOW. Anyone want to head up the next quilt show in September? The raffle quilt will be ready probably in APRIL. It will be out of Oriental fabric. Should be beautiful! Look for Photos next month. Hope you enjoy the slide show from February and March meeting. Happy Quilting!
